Morse Micro, has announced its Wi-Fi HaLow chip samples will be available to partners and customers at the end of July. For the first time, product developers around the world will evaluate the fabless semiconductor’s market-leading Wi-Fi solutions that provide 10x the range, 100x the area and 1000x the volume of traditional Wi-Fi.
Following its Series A funding of AUD $42 million from investors, including Blackbird Ventures and Main Sequence Ventures, Morse Micro has become Australia’s largest employer in the semiconductor industry. Its Wi-Fi HaLow solutions expand traditional Wi-Fi connectivity into emerging IoT ecosystems. It offers ultra-low power, longer range and secure connections at much higher capacities, enabling a whole new range of smart devices to connect wirelessly.
Starting as a team of four in 2016, Morse Micro now employs over 100 people in Australia, the US, China and India. The availability of its system-on-chip (SoC) and module samples will further accelerate the potential of Wi-Fi HaLow across commercial, residential, and industrial IOT markets through applications such as access control, security cameras, industrial automation and mobile devices. Morse Micro’s comprehensive Wi-Fi HaLow portfolio includes the industry’s smallest, fastest and lowest power chip which supports up to 8 MHz bandwidth. Wi-Fi HaLow signals penetrate obstacles more easily and can extend beyond 1 km, connecting far-flung IoT devices. A single Wi-Fi HaLow access point (AP) can connect over 8,000 devices, simplifying network deployment and reducing costs.
Michael de Nil, co-founder and CEO, said, “Today’s IoT market has unique connectivity requirements and use cases at scale. Traditional Wi-Fi is not meeting those requirements because it uses higher frequency and wider channels. This ultimately means shorter reach, limited penetration through obstacles, and higher power consumption. The characteristics of our Wi-Fi HaLow solution will redefine Wi-Fi connectivity for the Internet of Things.
“Morse Micro’s sampling milestone signifies an exciting inflection point for Wi-Fi HaLow. Over the last five years we have assembled one of the world’s best engineering teams here in Sydney and across the globe to unleash the full potential of Wi-Fi HaLow. By making this new technology available for early adopters, we expect to see Wi-Fi go from reaching billions of devices to tens of hundreds of billions of devices in the coming years.
“As a co-chair of the Wi-Fi HaLow Task group, Morse Micro is actively promoting Wi-Fi Alliance certification and progressing in the HaLow certification program to help our partners and customers accelerate the market shift to Wi-Fi HaLow technology,” concluded de Nil.
