PcVue Software Helps Manage Indonesia’s New Karian Dam

The operators of Indonesia’s new Karian dam are using PcVue software to collect data and help manage the massive USD146 million water storage facility.

One of the biggest challenges building the dam was working out how to collect data despite the large size of the waterway. PcVue’s adaptability and scalability proved pivotal in helping overcome this challenge.

PcVue was interfaced with various other systems to improve the operational efficiency of the dam and provide a consolidated information platform for the operator, including:

  • Remote monitoring through WebVue platform;
  • Complete reporting using Dream Report; and
  • Integration of 8 CCTV cameras using Onvif protocol to confirm critical water level alarms visually;

Indonesia’s largest dam area covers 2,226.44 hectares and can accommodate up to 314.7 million cubic metres of raw water. It can also irrigate 22,000 hectares of rice fields providing 13.9 cubic metres per second of raw water for irrigation, public water necessities and industrial needs. Karian Dam is a crucial infrastructure for the area.

Although the project is still expanding with the addition of several telemetric stations, the dam is already boosting the region’s agriculture efficiency and serving as a vital tool to prevent floods.

This project also helps on a larger scale. Jakarta faces a significant challenge as it continues to sink at an alarming rate. This subsidence, primarily caused by excessive groundwater extraction, threatens the city’s infrastructure and the well-being of its inhabitants. The Karian Dam presents a crucial solution to this problem by providing a new and reliable source of water. By reducing the city’s dependency on groundwater, the dam helps mitigate the subsidence issue.
