Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering Announces 2024 Fellows

The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) has elected 32 new fellows, drawing on a range of skills and expertise that the Academy says showcases the breadth and depth of world-class Australian innovation.

“This diverse group of Australia’s brightest stars in technology and engineering embodies progress, hope and unparalleled innovation in the face of these challenges,” said ATSE President Dr Katherine Woodthorpe. “Our Fellows are bridging from discovery to shaping new industries in the ultimate service of better living for all Australians and the world.”

Elected by their peers, the cohort joins over 900 of Australia’s leading engineers and applied scientists who have been elected to the Academy for their outstanding contributions across Australia’s innovation ecosystem.

The full list of new ATSE Fellows for 2024 include:

Australian Capital Territory 
  • Dr Josep (Pep) Canadell: a world-leading climate scientist and chief research scientist at the CSIRO.
  • Rear Admiral Rachel Durbin: a maritime engineering leader and the ADF’s head navy engineering and defence seaworthiness regulator.

  • UNSW Scientia Professor Liming Dai: a materials science expert and Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Carbon Science and Innovation.
  • Distinguished Professor Michelle Leishman: plant ecologist and director of the Smart Green Cities Research Centre at Macquarie University.
  • Anne O’Neill: a health innovation changemaker and director at NSW Health.
  • Guy Templeton: infrastructure engineer and Chair of Infrastructure, Transport, Construction and Planning at the Business Council of Australia.
  • Scientia Professor Toby Walsh: artificial intelligence pioneer and chief scientist at UNSW’s AI Institute.
  • Professor Yixia (Sarah) Zhang: an advanced materials creator at Western Sydney University
  • Professor Chuan Zhao: a hydrogen paradigm shifter and Professor of Chemistry at UNSW.
  • Honorary Fellow Fiona Simson: agriculture advocate and chairperson of the Commission for International Agricultural Research and Future Food Systems at CRC.
Queensland
  • Anne-Marie Birkill: technology and healthcare investor and co-founder, venture partner and director at OneVentures.
  • Dr Iris Depaz: life sciences champion and MD of the Translational Science Hub at Sanofi-Aventis Australia.
  • Professor Clinton Fookes: artificial intelligence innovator and Associate Dean at Queensland University of Technology.
  • Professor Paul Simshauser: energy economist and CEO at Powerlink Queensland.
  • Professor Lianzhou Wang: semiconductor materials innovator and ARC Australian Laureate Fellow at UQ.
  • Professor Xiwang Zhang: sustainable technology innovator and Professor and Centre Director at UQ’s ARC COE for electrochemical transformation of CO2.
South Australia 
  • Professor Alex Brown: medical expert and Professor of Indigenous Genomics at the ANU and The Kids Research Institute Australia.
  • Dr Fiona Kerr: human-centred technologist and founder and director at the NeuroTech Institute.
  • Dr James Tickner: scientist, innovator, entrepreneur and Chief Technology Officer at Chrysos Corporation.
  • Professor Yan Zhuge: waste conversion trailblazer and Professor in Structural Engineering at UniSA.
Tasmania 
  • Dr Michelle Heupel: ocean ecologist and Executive Director of the Integrated Marine Observing System at the University of Tasmania.

  • Dr Angeline Achariya: food innovation leader and CEO at Innovation GameChangers.
  • Professor Frank Caruso: particle engineer and Melbourne Uni professor.
  • Karen Dobson: change management leader and president and MD at Dow Australia and New Zealand.
  • Professor Misty Jenkins: cancer immunologist and laboratory head and co-chair, MRFF Indigenous Health Research Fund at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.
  • Distinguished Professor David Moss: photonics researcher and founding director of the Optical Sciences Centre at Swinburne University.
  • Adjunct Research Professor Craig Rayner: pharmaceutical development expert and director, translational medicine, infectious diseases development at Moderna, and distinguished alumnus at Monash University
  • Professor Karin Verspoor: AI in healthcare leader and Executive Dean, of the School of Computing Technologies at RMIT University
  • Dr Zongli Xie: membrane and catalysis groundbreaker and principal research scientist, group leader of Materials for Energy, Environment and Health, CSIRO.

  • Rachelle Doyle: energy transition advocate and manager of strategic programs at Rio Tinto.
