Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) has awarded road safety developer Acusensus its highest accolade – the ‘Excellence in Research and Development’ award.

ITS Australia uses the Awards to showcase the best transport technology development and deployment in the country, reinforcing the nation’s ITS capability and position as a world leader.

The Excellence in Research and Development Award – presented at an awards ceremony in Sydney last night, recognises organisations for their ground-breaking transport technology, research, development or innovation.

Acusensus founder and Managing Director Alexander Jannink said he was honoured that his company was acknowledged for its contribution to reducing road trauma and fatalities.

“Our goal is to make the roads as safe as possible. Despite improved vehicle designs and road safety improvements, road fatalities have actually been increasing since 2013, largely attributed to distracted driving. Our technology is designed to prevent hundreds of thousands of deaths and road injuries worldwide,” Jannink said.

“It’s deeply gratifying for our technology to be recognised by the industry for its ability to efficiently change behaviours of road drivers on a larger scale.”

Acusensus launched its world-first ‘Heads-Up’ safety solution in 2018 to drive behavioural change on road networks, enabling authorities to more easily prosecute drivers for illegal mobile phone use.

Acusensus ‘Heads-Up’ technology automatically detects illegal phone use via fixed or roadside smart cameras that autonomously capture high-resolution photographic evidence of driver behaviour. The AI-based system can also simultaneously detect speed, seatbelt compliance, incorrect lane use and unregistered vehicles.
