Science & Technology Australia will launch a national search for the next stellar STEM Superstars on August 5, 2024. Superstars of STEM is a program that advances gender equity by turning a group of scientists and technologists into highly visible media personalities.
Running since 2017, the program is open to women and non-binary STEM professionals.
“The Superstars of STEM program powerfully drives diversity in science and technology and creates media stars from the program participants,” said Science & Technology Australia Deputy CEO and Superstars of STEM Program Manager Sandra Gardam.
“The Superstars of STEM are drawn from every part of the STEM sector, including the private sector, and at all stages of their careers and with different personal backgrounds and context,” she added. “The program gives them the confidence and skills they need to share their expertise with the public through the media and has created many highly-recognised science communicators.”
“Superstars of STEM has given me the skills, training, and resources I need to build my confidence as a media commentator on water challenges,” said current Superstar of STEM Dr Jessica Bohorquez, a water systems engineer from consultancy Ricardo. “Since starting the program, I’ve had training in interview skills, using social media strategically, delivering public talks, and even started my own podcast, Our Water Connection. The program has given me opportunities to become a recognised media expert and opened doors for me professionally.”
Science & Technology Australia is the nation’s peak body, representing more than 225,000 scientists and technologists. Superstars of STEM is funded by the Australian government and supported by partner organisations such as Google and the Department of Defence.
