Geotab says it has extended its Australian certification to support Smart On-Board Mass (OBM) system pairing with Airtec Corporation, a move the company argues closes a compliance gap for heavy haulage operators using access schemes that require certified mass monitoring.
The announcement, made as Geotab showcases the solution at MEGATRANS 2026, means the company can support Telematics Monitoring Application (TMA) schemes with or without Smart OBM requirements, as well as Road Infrastructure Management (RIM) schemes, via a single platform.
Smart OBM is used in parts of Australia’s heavy vehicle regulatory environment to digitally measure axle group and gross mass in real time and transmit data to regulators and road managers through the Telematics Analytics Platform (TAP), administered by Transport Certification Australia (TCA). The intent is to support access decisions for restricted routes and higher mass limits, with controls intended to detect and minimise tampering.
Geotab said that, until now, operators wanting to enrol vehicles in schemes requiring Smart OBM often had to run a separate system alongside Geotab’s telematics, which could add vendor complexity and increase compliance risk.
The integration combines Geotab’s GO9-LTM telematics device (hardware variants D, E and F), which is TCA type-approved, with Airtec’s AXS Series Smart OBM system, also TCA type-approved. Geotab said this enables fleets to enrol vehicles directly into TCA schemes that require Smart OBM.
In the release, Geotab said the change could help operators meet access requirements for Higher Mass Limits (HML) and Performance Based Standards (PBS) networks and routes, as well as provide real-time weight visibility to help avoid overload breaches.
Andrew Hintz, associate vice president, heavy transport APAC at Geotab, said the approval “removes one of the most significant barriers” for heavy haulage customers and would reduce the need to manage multiple vendors to meet Smart OBM requirements.
Jacinta Lane, general manager at Airtec, said the pairing was intended to deliver “regulator-ready mass data in real time” and simplify compliance for fleets.
Geotab also said it supports operators through third-party services, naming Prodrive Compliance as a Marketplace partner offering services including NHVR audit preparation, driver work diary reviews and assistance with “Notice to Produce” requests.
